He earned his BA from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, his master's of divinity from Duke University and his doctor of ministry from Howard University. He was appointed program director of United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice (UCC-CRJ) (1969). He became an executive director and CEO of United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice (1985), and vice president of National Council of Churches of the USA (1988), as well as executive director and CEO of NAACP (1993-1994).
