  • Source citation: Landolfo e Giovanni Colonna secondo un codice bodleiano, 1885, via Archive.org, January 23, 2018:
  • Information found: page 8 (this Giovanni Colonna was a Dominican, the son of Bartolomeo, who was titled "domicello di Belvedere"; he has been confused with several family members of the same name, and his works have been wrongly attributed to them; the most significant of his works, although it remains almost entirely unpublished, is Mare historiarum, which has been universally attributed to a relative named Giovanni who was named archbishop of Messina in 1255, but it has been shown to have been composed towards the middle of the 14th century, when the archbishop was long dead; also author of Liber de viris illustribus christianis editus a Fr. Johanne de Columna, romano, which is also unpublished)

  • Information found: (Colonna, Giovanni; born in last decade of 13th century, not possible to determine the date 1298 with certainty; son of Bartolomeo di Giovanni, of the branch of the signori di Gallicano bearing the title of "domicello di Belvedere"; exact date of death unknown, between the last months of 1343 and first of 1344; studied at Chartres, Troyes and Amiens; entered the Dominican order before 1320, when he was in Paris to continue his studies; named predicatore generale of his order in 1324, about the time he was named chaplain to the bishop of Nicosia, where he probably stayed until 1332; author of De viris illustribus or Liber de viris illustribus, still unpublished except for extracts, and Mare historiarum, a compilation of universal history, of which the complete text survives in two manuscripts)

  • Information found: pages 538-539 (Friar Giovanni Colonna, a Dominican who had studied in France and had acted as chaplain to the Bishop of Nicosia before coming to Avignon in the early 1330s; served there in the papal curia before returning to Rome in 1338 where he died five years later; friend of Petrarch, from whom eight letters to Colonna survive; wrote De viris illustribus (survives in 3 manuscripts) and a universal history of the world entitled Mare historiarum (survives in 5 manuscripts of the original version and 5 of a Spanish translation); "the De viris, like the Mare, apparently exercised little influence and has never been published except for brief excerpts")

  • Source citation: Forte, Stephen L. "John Colonna, O.P.: life and writings," in Archivum fratrum Praedicatorum," v. 20 (1950), pages 369-414:
  • Information found: pages 370-371 ("The curriculum vitae of John Colonna has long been confused with that of his hononymous, himself a member of the Order of Preachers (and archbishop of Messina) but older than he by three quarters of a century"; some historians put the birth of the younger John Colonna at 1265 or a little later, some suggest the year 1298; "we feel bound to accept this apparently late date") page 380 (exact date of death unknown; Petrarch describes a last meeting with him in Palestrina, in October 1343; he therefore probably died "sometime at the end of 1343") page 381 (chronology: "Date of birth: 1298. Student at Chartres with Landolph Colonna: 1315 [or later]. Received in the Dominican Order before 1320 (at Rome?). Student at Paris in 1320. Preacher General in 1324. Chaplain with John Conti at Nicosia in 1332 [or earlier]. At the Papal Curia in Avignon after 1332. Vicar at the Priory of S. Sabina in 1338. Lector at the Priory of Tivoli: Autumn of 1339. Working on the Mare historiarum: 1340. Mentioned in the will of Card. Matthew Orsini: 1340. Death shortly after October 1343") page 402, note 73 ("The anonymous history of the world called 'Mer des histoires,' published several times, and attributed to John Colonna (cf. Coppinger [Copinger], Supplement to Hain's Repertoriurn bibliographicum, part. II, vol. I, Berlin 1926, 401, nos. 3990, 3991, 3992) is certainly not a French version of the Mare historiarum of John Colonna. This false attribution has been already refuted by Quétif-Echard, Script. ord. Praed. This work is entirely different from the Mare historiarum ...)
