He completed his BA degree in 1959 and qualified as a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk) in 1964. In 1980 became a senior lecturer at UP's Faculty of Theology; spent 13 years at the University of Vista; in 2002 became professor and director of the Centre for Contextual Ministry in the Faculty of Theology at UP. Malan Nel has also always been a theologian; involved with the training of pastors, pastors' wives, the youth of the church, and seminars on building up the church in numerous congregations)
