Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, viewed February 12, 2020 : Burges, George (Classical scholar. Born in a remote station in Bengal in 1785 or 1786. Graduated Trinity College, Cambridge: BA in 1807 and MA in 1810. In addition to literary pursuits he wrote a series of papers called "Hungry Handless," to show the social evils of excessive machinery. Died at Ramsgate, on January 11, 1864, aged 78.
