St. Marks, Fla., Feb. 28, 1831; admitted to the bar in 1854 and began practice in Washington, D.C.; engaged in agricutlrual pursiuts in Warren Co., N.C. in 1859; served in the Confederate Army and taken prisoner at Gettysburg; settled at "Tokay Vineyard" near Fayetteville, N.C., and became interested in viticulture; 1st president of the Society of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors in North Carolina; elected to the 48th-49th Congresses, 1883-1887; returned to Tokay, where he tended his vineyard and engaged in literary pursuits until his death, Aug. 6, 1910)
