The Christian Union was founded in Monroe County, Tenn., in 1886. In 1902 it was reorganized under the name Holiness Church (Camp Creek, N.C.). In 1907 the name was changed to Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn.). In 1923 a faction of the church led by A. J. Tomlinson was expelled and formed a separate church in Cleveland, Tenn., which became known as the Church of God (Tomlinson). When A. J. Tomlinson died in 1943, his son, Homer A. Tomlinson, and some of his followers left the Tomlinson church to found the Church of God (World Headquarters) in Queens Village, N.Y.
