The Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 426 (Josiah Henson, born in Charles County, Maryland on June 15, 1789 was a runaway slave from Kentucky. Reportedly the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom in "Uncle Tom's Cabin". He led 18 slaves from Maryland to the Amos Riley farm in Daviess County, Ky. where he became an overseer. Later he became a preacher. He escaped to Canada after he was threatened to be sold. There he founded a community for runaway slaves and became a popular abolitionist speaker. He died on May 5, 1883.)
