For more than two decades he taught in several graduate theological schools in the US and Germany. His publications explore a range of topics, from essays on ancient Christianity to his recent published translations of modern German poetry. In 2005, he published together with co-editor Elizabeth Dreyer, MINDING THE SPIRIT. THE STUDY OF CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY (Johns Hopkins University Press). He also published JEAN GERSON AND 'DE CONSOLATIONE THEOLOGIAE' (1418): THE CONSOLATION OF A BIBLICAL AND REFORMING THEOLOGY FOR A DISORDERED AGE (J. C. B. Mohr [Paul Siebeck], 1991). More recently, he has published a new translation of Rilke's poems entitled Prayers of a Young Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke's Quest for the Dark God (Paraclete Press; 2013). A regular contributor of articles to the journal WEAVINGS, Burrows also currently serves as poetry editor of the journal SPIRITUS: A JOURNAL OF CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY.
