Oxford dictionary of national biography, via WWW, August 26, 2014 (Burkitt, Francis Crawford (1864-1935); biblical scholar, born in London on September 3, 1864; lived in Cambridge with his wife, Amy Persis, and together they had one son, the archaeologist Miles Burkitt; in 1903 he began his university career at Cambridge when he was given the university lecturership in palaeography; elected fellow of the British Academy in 1905 and fellow of Trinity in 1926; became widely known as a Syriac scholar with respect to textual criticism of the gospels and was the first to recognize the importance of the Syriac palimpsest from the Monastery of St. Catherine at Mt. Sinai; contributed to Old Testament scholarship as well; died at his home in Cambridge, 1 West Road, on May 11, 1935)
