One day earlier that year [1969], I'd shared a New York cab ... with the political writer and jazz critic Nat Hentoff. He'd heard, he said, that I played a little guitar, sang a little, that I had written some songs ... [and] had mentioned this to a friend of his, Maynard Solomon, president of Vanguard Records.
