She earned her BA in history from University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee (1969), her MA in history from Howard University (1974), and her PhD in history from the University of Rochester. She was appointed assistant professor at the University of Maryland at College Park (1982-1986); was awarded a Distinguished Scholars Medal from University of Rochester (1994); was granted tenure at the University of Pennsylvania (1993); was a professor at Harvard University, History Department (1998) and chair of Harvard's Department of African and African American Studies (2006-2007). She was inducted into the Academy of Women Achievers of the Boston YWCA (2000) and was named the Inaugural John Hope Franklin Professor of American Legal History at Duke University Law School (2010-2011))
