He became a lawyer after graduating from Macon Georgia's Mercer University. He was elected a member of the Georgia legislature in 1882. Running on the "Farmers Alliance Democratic Party" ticket he became a U.S. Congressman in 1890. Watson was the Populist Party candidate for Vice President in 1895 and their candidate for President in 1904 and 1908. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1920 where he served until his death on Sept. 26, 1922.)
