In 1941, his family moved to Sydney, Australia, where he was raised. He studie Semitic philology and Classics at the University of Melbourne; he immigrated to Israel in 1960. He obtained his Ph. D. at Harvard University in 1965; in 1966 he returned to Israel and became a lecturer in Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; he became Full Professor of Armenian Studies in 1980; he retired from Hebrew University in 2007, continuing there as Professor Emeritus)
