Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 823-824 (Otis Arnold Singletary, Jr. was born on October 31, 1921 in Gulfport, Mississippi. Earned BA from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi in 1947 and from Louisiana State University, an MA (1949) and a PhD. (1954). Served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War II and in the Korean War. Became a professor and administrator at the University of Texas in 1954, then in 1961, was appointed chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Became vice-president of the American Council on Education, then in 1968, the vice-chancellor for academic affairs at University of Texas. Became president of the University of Kentucky in 1969, retired from this position in 1987.)
