She left South Africa for Switzerland in 1967 and worked at the World Council for Churches. She returned to South Africa after 21 years, and was appointed as deputy general of the South African Council of Churches. Between 1999 and 2011 she served as chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa. She is committed to democracy and human rights, especially the rights of women.
