He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1923. He served as Adjunct Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the Andover Newton Theological School from 1951 to 1958. He was a lecturer at Harvard Divinity School from 1954 to 1958, Professor of Pastoral Theology from 1958 to 1959, and the Dean of Harvard Divinity School from 1959 to 1968.)
