- Information found: (David Roberts (painter); born Stockbridge near Edinburgh; died London; his lithographs and large oil paintings made him a prominent Orientalist painter; he was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841; started his career as an apprentice house painter and decorator, then as a stage scenery painter for a circus, then a theater; in 1819 he became the scene painter at the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh; he began to produce oil paintings seriously around this time; moved to London in 1822 as scenic designer and stage painter; by 1829 he was working full-time as a fine artist; in 1831 he was elected president of the Society of British Artists; traveled to Spain and Tangiers in 1832-33, then for a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon in 1838-39, resulting in Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842-1849, and Egypt & Nubia series; visited Italy in 1851 and 1853; his last volume, Italy, Classical, Historical and Picturesque, was published in 1859)
