  • Biographical or historical data: William Hord Nicholls, also known as Bill Nicholls (b. July 19, 1914, Lexington, Kentucky-d. August 3, 1978, Mirror Lake, New Hampshire), educator and agricultural economist, graduated from the University of Kentucky with an A.B. in 1934. Nicholls went on to earn his M.A., 1938, and Ph.D., 1941, degrees at Harvard University, and did post-doctoral work as a Fellow at the University of Chicago from 1941 to 1942. His doctoral dissertation, published in 1941, on Imperfect Competition Within Agricultural Industries, established his reputation as one of the country's leading agricultural economists. Dr. Nicholls began his teaching career at Iowa State University in 1938, as instructor, assistant professor and then associate professor of economics. He moved on to the University of Chicago in 1945, as assistant professor of economics, before arriving at Vanderbilt University as a full professor of economics in 1948. At Vanderbilt, he became Chairman of the Department of Economics and Business Administration in 1958, serving until 1961, was Director of the Graduate Center for Latin American Studies from 1965 to 1977, and Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor from 1973 to 1974. He also served as president of the Southern Economic Association, 1958-1959, and president of the American Farm Economic Association, 1960-1961. He was editor of the Journal of Political Economy, 1946-1948, and the Journal of Farm Economics, 1958-1960. His expertise in the area of farm economics has been recognized by governmental agencies, committees, and advisory boards, including service to the President's Council of Economic Advisers, 1953-1954; the National Advisory Committee on Manpower Development and Training, 1962; and the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, 1970-1973. His research and professional associations in the field of agricultural economics also extended beyond the United States. He was an economist for the Turkish Mission of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Fundacao Getulio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro (Getulio Vargas Foundation), and served as a consultant on Latin America for the Ford Foundation in Brazil and New York, 1960-1964. Dr. Nicholls was married twice, and had two children: David Elliot and Dorothy Louise. His first wife, Elizabeth Banfield Burwell, whom he married on September 5, 1936, in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, died in 1969. He married Elizabeth Carr Foote in 1970. Dr. Nicholls is buried at Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
