This land was conquered and converted by the Swedes in the 12th cent. The eastern part of Finland (Karelia) was ceded to Russia in 1721 by the Swedes. The rest of Finland was ceded to Russia by Sweden after her defeat by Russian forces in 1809. Finland was then organized as an autonomous grand duchy in personal union with the Czar of Russia. In 1917 Finland proclaimed her independence from the Russian Empire. As a result of her defeat in the 1939-1940 war with the Soviet Union, Finland was compelled to cede the Karelian Isthmus to the USSR)
