He received an extensive education in theology, philosophy, and the liberal arts; led a Portuguese invasion of the Moroccan port city of Ceuta (1415); led an attack against the Moroccan port of Tangier (1437); assisted in the capture of Alcacer, Morocco; was head of the Military Order of Christ, a Portuguese brotherhood of knights (1420); supervised the colonization of the Azores (1439-1448); approved the capture and sale of West African slaves in Lagos (1444); set the foundation for Portuguese imperial ventures in North and sub-Saharan Africa. He died 13 November 1460)
