- Information found: (James Mitchell, American politician; b. Sept. 14, 1818, in Derry to Protestant parents; emigrated to America in the 1830s; became a Methodist preacher in Indiana, an advocate of abolitionism and colonization, and in 1848 Secretary of the American Colonization Society of Indiana, first meeting Abraham Lincoln in this capacity; Lincoln appointed Mitchell as Commissioner of Emigration on Aug. 4, 1862, and, as commissioner, he oversaw the establishment of colonies abroad for freed slaves; after the Civil War returned to the ministry in the Methodist church, becoming a prominent religious leader in the Georgia Episcopal Methodist Conference; took his ministry to Mount Zion, Ga., in 1877, founding the Mount Zion Seminary, the predecessor institution of the current Mount Zion High School; served as director of the Seminary until his death on Mar. 2, 1903)
