DNB (Foliot, Gilbert, d. 1188 (Spring); b. early in the 12th cent.; bishop successively of Hereford & London; the earliest fact known about him is his profession as a monk in the famous monastery of Clugny; rose to the rank of prior, from which post he was promoted to the headship of the affiliated house of Abbeville, and from this to the abbacy of Gloucester; 1148 promoted to bishopric of Hereford; 1163 transl. to see of London)
