  • Information found: March 20, 1993 (Father Luis Olivares, voice for the poor died Thursday night at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; born San Antonio in 1934 to a family of Mexican immigrants, joined a Compton seminary at age 13; earned masters degree in business administration from Notre Dame Univesrity and quickly rose to high administrative posts within Claretian order; life changed forever after meeting Cesar Chavez, founder of United Farm Workers union in early 1970s, joined struggle and dedicated rest of his life to fighting injustice; leading spiritual force behind United Neighborhoods Organization, a grass-roots group that fought for low-income housing and other services in Latino communities; after becoming pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in 1981, he found war refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala flocking to his parish; spoke out against military aid to El Salvador and opened the doors of his church to those fleeing persecution; in1985, declared his church a santuary for Central-American refugees facing deportation)
