They promptly ordered the disbanding of the Jewish community and forced it to reorganize as a Zsido Tanacs (Jewish Council), under the leadership of Rabbi Pal (Meir) Weisz. During the period of ghettoization and deportation, news of the so-called Kasztner train reached Debrecen via messengers from the Zionist youth movement. Hebrew Wikipedia, viewed November 2, 2016 (Profesor Meʼir Ṿais = מאיר וייס; rabbi, educator, and Bible scholar; born in Budapest in 1908; died on May 7, 1998; winner of the Israel Prize in Jewish Studies in 1990; Professor in the Bible Department of Hebrew University; known for his Bible studies, especially on Psalms; son of Ḥayim and Ḥayah-Sarah Furṭ. In 1926 he began studies at the Rabbinical seminary in Budapest and in 1927 began to study Semitic languages, ancient Near East, and history of Rome at the Hungarian National University of Sciences. In 1932 he received his Ph. D., and in 1933 he was ordained as a rabbi, and was appointed rabbi in Hóldmezõvásárhely, Hungary. In 1937 he became rabbi in Debrecen where he served until 1944. The Kasztner train took him to Switzerland via Bergen-Belzen, and he arrived in Israel on September 2, 1945. He became a Jewish educator and principal in Raʻananah at the Yavneh School between 1946 and 1949, Maaleh High School in Jerusalem between 1949 and 1957, then was called to teach at Bar-Ilan University in the Bible Department. He was active in the World Congress for Jewish Studies until 1993. In 1960 he joined the Department of Bible at the Hebrew University and rose through the ranks until 1972. In that year he received the Herzl Prize for Bible scholarship and two years later, the Max Nordau Prize.
